“How did you find out?”

“McCabe phoned. He thought it was odd. Apparently Hinchins told him he had your permission.”

She pushed the duvet off. “I need to get home—”

“No, don’t worry, I’ve contacted the sheriff’s office and they are getting in touch with your local law enforcement and asking them to check it out. I also spoke to my guy Jim. He is going over to your farm and will let me know what he discovers. I want you to leave this to me.”

“You don’t understand, I can’t just sit back and let people dig up my property. I have to get back there and—”

“Is there something you’re not telling me, Hildy? If there is, now is the time to spill the beans.”

“No nothing.”

“Sure?”

“Yes.” It was the truth. She wasn’t keeping anything about the property from him.

“Okay. I have a proposition to put to you that I want you to think about.”

Interesting. “Yes?”

“Two propositions actually. The first is that I buy into your farm as half owner so I can deal with Hinchins legally—”

“But—”

He held up a palm. “Wait, hear me out. Secondly, I pay off your debt to Hinchins so you’re free of him, or I could do both?”

Shaking her head negatively, she clasped his hand. “Thank you, but this debt is personal. I need to pay Hinchins back for my parents’ funerals. The idea of us owning the farm jointly is a good one but if our relationship flounders, we’ll be tied together financially.”

“I could never be anything other than someone who wants the best for you, Hildy, whatever happens with us.
